Barcelona and Argentine star Lionel Messi has spoken for the first time about his reported rivalry between him and 2016 Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese star helped Real Madrid and Portugal win Uefa Champions League and EURO Cup in 2016 among other trophies in a year he described as ‘The Best’ of his career.

However, unlike what the media makes it look, the five times World Player of the year has no bad intentions and jealousy towards the former Manchester United. He believes he is a great player.


“There is a mutual respect,” Messi said.

“I view Ronaldo as a great player who has achieved great things because that is exactly what he is.

“My motivation, though, has always come from wanting to do well for Barcelona and Argentina, and the fans.”
